20.000 years ago the Alps and the attached foreland were covered by a massive glacier.Around that time the original land was sedimented so that, at the end of the Ice Age, 10.000 years ago, a new land composition was formed . The eastern part of the Flachgau area was formed by a smaller Wallersee glacier, an offshoot of the Salzach glacier.
The“ Eiszeit Rundweg“ (Ice Age Trail) describes the remnants and traces of the Ice Age at 11 points. The route takes you over the „Steinwandl“, the „Grosse Plaike“ past the war memorial back to Henndorf. 22 showcases explain the formation of the countryside through the Ice Age glacier in a way everybody can understand.
From the Steinwandl there is a magnificent view across the Alps. The walk commences at the school. From thereon one has to follow the light-blue signs showing „Eiszeit-Rundweg“. The full length of the walk takes a whole day, is around 13 km. and you need to have the fitting gear and be dressed accordingly – the half-day tour, around 7 km. takes you around the foot of the Henndorf hills. These routes are also fit for traffic. |
