Salzburg's most recent addition to its nature parks is in the rural district of Mattsee, directly near the village and the lakes Mattsee and Obertrumersee. Despite its moderate height (801 m) the Buchberg is a real highlight overlooking the Salzburg Lake District: from the peak of the Buchberg one can see across the undulating foothills to the magnificent Alps with a view over 120 mountain peaks, - from the „Traunstein“ to the „Wilden Kaiser“.
The Nature Park, 35 hectares in size, was created to maintain the natural status and to enhance the further natural development of the area.
Economic system in line with Nature
The Buchberg has been farmed for centuries, forming it as it is today. In particular it is a perfect example of the diversity of forests (mainly mixed woods), meadows, ponds, orchards and typical farming gardens.
Escape from the city – peace and quiet near Salzburg
It's only a stones throw from the hectic of the main city of Salzburg: in 20 – 30 minutes (about 20 km) you can reach the Buchberg Nature Park, where you can relax in peace and quiet and tank up energy away from the routine of life.
A soft life
The Buchberg Nature Park stands for a softer life, regeneration and health – not for sporting high-perfomance.
It is an ideal place to make a day out, whether to walk over the flower-covered meadows, to catch the last rays of sunshine in autumn or to walk in snow-shoes through the glistening woods – there is always something to do the whole year round!
Apart from the attraction of the countryside there are also cultural and traditional events to enjoy, and the possibility of swimming or making the most of all the water-sports in Mattsee.
Courses, workshops and guided tours of the Buchberg Nature Park top off our offers.
