Berndorf Print

The idyllically-situated village of Berndorf near Salzburg lies nestled in the gentle hills of the Salzburg Lake District.

It is thought that the name Berndorf  was derived from an early bavarian farmer, Pero, and the names of many other farms, hamlets  and villages in the area also have their roots in the early bavarian period.

The village of Berndorf was a place of pilgrimage as far back as 1700, when people came to seek solace and shelter with the „Radiant  Madonna“.

From 1829 until 1835  Franz Gruber, the composer of the world-famous Christmas carol „Silent Night, Holy Night“,  lived in Berndorf and worked there as teacher, sexton and organist.  A memorial plaque and an annual Franz Gruber Christmas concert remind us of this.

The highlight in autumn,  part of the Farmers Harverst, is Berndorf‘s annual Horse & Carriage Gala, where riders and drivers come from near and far to partake.

There are several paths and tracks for walking and cycling laid out in the area, many with magnificent views across the hills of the Lake District to the Alps.

Those who enjoy eating and drinking won’t miss out!   - A variety of inns and restaurants serving local, traditional dishes can be found in Berndorf and surrounding area.
