Oberndorf is a centrally-situated market town in the northern district of Flachgau with a population of 5.500. It lies on the banks of the river Salzach at a height of 394 m above sea-level and was originally an old boatsman’s settlement, looking back on a varied history. On 24th December 1818 the world-famous Christmas carol “Silent Night, Holy Night” was performed for the first time here in the boatman’s church of St. Nicholas. The church has been pulled down but a memorial chapel has been erected on the site and crowds of people from all over the world visit the chapel at Christmas, when an international mass is held and the carol is sung.
Part of the town’s cultural past is re-enacted in the traditional “Schifferstechen”, when boatsmen vie with each other on their boats, pirate battles, shooting competitions, Midsummer night festivals and rides on punts. Oberndorf is only 20 km. from the music festival city of Salzburg, which is easily reached by the half-hourly local electric railway service, but it is also a paradise for walkers hikers and cyclists.
For sport lovers there are tennis courts, curling tracks, beach volleyball courts, skater park and numerous pathways and tracks for power walking and jogging. Typical Salzburg hospitality and local dishes are to be found everywhere.
