Salt production in the province of Salzburg dates back to the time of the Celts. In the era of the ruling Salzburg prince archbishops, the origin of their power lay in the "white gold" - salt. Before Salzburg became part of Austria in 1816, the salt trade lost much of its importance and in 1989 the millennia-old salt production in Hallein came to an end. Today the mine is a popular attraction for tourists.
The entire circuit leads through the Tennengau Salzach Valley and Salzburg's Seenland with numerous sights along the way.
The start for the Salt & Lakes Tour is in Seekirchen at Wallersee. Via Schleedorf it goes past the Tiefensteinklamm gorge and on to Mattsee with a beautiful view (for example from the terrace of the castle café) of the lake. Then the trail leads via the Perwang nature reserve on Grabensee to Michaelbeuern with its Benedictine abbey and from Lamprechtshausen to Oberndorf with the world-famous Silent Night Chapel. From there, the route continues along the Salzach to Salzburg.
If you feel like it, you can continue cycling: via Hallein to Golling and on the other side of the Salzach back to Salzburg (south loop). Finally, the trail leads along the route of the old Ischl railway to Eugendorf and back to the starting point in Seekirchen.
