The confrontation with a stressful illness diagnosis led Gabriele Neudecker, mother of three children, to challenge herself - she enrolled for a degree in communication sciences with a focus on film. Fortunately, the diagnosis turned out to be wrong after more than a year.

Her talent was honoured with the Salzburg Screenplay Award back in 1991 - back then she was still typing on a typewriter!

Originally from Salzburg, she moved to Köstendorf with her parents. Her attachment to her homeland still characterises her work today: her film "Freaky" (2001) deals with the themes of home and foreignness and is one of the most awarded festival films in Austria. In 2011, she ventured into self-employment with Pimp the Pony Productions and dealt intensively with a taboo subject with "Deserter". Her aim: not to remain on the surface, but to go into depth.

"I am inspired above all by people who go their own way, question boundaries and are not satisfied with simple answers."

In her documentary "Naturjuwel Wallersee", she also impressively brings the beauty of the Flachgau region to the screen. The atmospheric landscape shots not only inspire tourism representatives, but also all those who feel connected to the region. However, it is not only places, but also people that take centre stage in her work: with sensitivity, she puts fascinating personalities in the spotlight. For example, the sacristan Goiginger from Köstendorf, the museum curator Ingrid Weese-Weydemann, the flowering area officer Anita Himmer and the award-winning chef Emanuel Weyringer provide fascinating insights into their worlds. Musician Doris Kirschhofer also impresses - not only with her overtones and undertones, but also with acrobatic exercises on the stand-up paddle board.

Intensive research processes that allowed her to immerse herself deeply in life stories were particularly formative for her. "These personal insights show me time and again how complex the world is - and that's exactly what I try to capture in my films."

For her, film is a dialogue with the audience - an invitation to look at the world from a different perspective for a moment. If this perspective is interesting, touching or surprising, then her films have achieved their goal. She always remains open to new challenges: Her upcoming projects include a youth series for Netflix that questions viewing habits and surprises with unconventional narrative styles.

She is open to technological developments such as artificial intelligence and uses them to create subtitles, for example - a huge time-saver. But for the future of film art, she would like to see more courage to be unconventional and a stronger "female gaze". She emphasises: "AI must not displace the human element in storytelling. Because in the end, it's not algorithms, but real, living stories that touch us."
