The most important realisation from 20 years of cultural work in Salzburg's Seenland should be mentioned first: Art does not provide answers, it poses questions, provides stimuli and impulses, a reaction to the world. Verena and Leo Fellinger agree on this. Cultural institutions are social actors. With this in mind, the Fellingers and a group of ambitious art enthusiasts founded the Emailwerk and turned it into an art venue whose significance is undisputed after two decades.

"20 years of success are the result of the work of many culture enthusiasts."

Verena Fellinger was Managing Director from 2004 to 2025, Leo Fellinger has been Chairman of the Kunstbox association since 2001.
It took a lot of heads and hands. On the initiative of Leo and Verena Fellinger, a handful of culture enthusiasts came together. They wanted to set the tone beyond the northern city limits of Salzburg and enrich the Salzburg Seenland and Seekirchen region with contemporary art and culture. They finally founded the Kunstbox cultural association in 2001. The former enamelling plant of the Windhager company was rebuilt over a 9-month construction period and the enamelling plant was opened in May 2005.

The team develops new artistic programmes, creates well thought-out concert series on the borderline between jazz, world music, new folk music and singer/songwriting, and holds controversial discussions on current socially relevant topics.

Over the past ten years, around 300,000 guests have attended almost 6,000 events and workshops. The programme is aimed at all generations, with a particular focus on children. A few examples of events: I-can't-sing choir, land art workshops, breakdance workshops, theatre and music workshops, creative children's days, art trips

We have favourite projects, of course. For Verena, it's the "Pop & Gospel Choir", because singing here releases an incredible amount of positive energy. For Leo, it was "SprachLust", the exhibition accompanying the feasibility study for a language museum. A highlight of our cultural work.

During 20 years, a lot of hoppalas naturally happen. Verena has collected the most original ones and immortalised them in a book of anecdotes, which was published to mark the 20th anniversary.

"Art strengthens our ability to see the world from different perspectives. And it creates moments that touch us, connect us and sometimes even change us."

The Emailwerk is a sustainable building with an environmentally conscious team, and the Austrian Ecolabel is just one of many proofs of this. For many years, the Emailwerk has also been recognised as an educational establishment, with a focus on music.
