Two-city circular route
Oberndorf near Salzburg

To learn about the interesting historical backgrounds of the two traditional places of Oberndorf in the province of Salzburg resp. Running in Bavaria A varied and easy circular walk has been created to give interested visitors a better understanding of the Salzach. The easy route - which can also be mastered by inexperienced walkers without any problems - starts at the Stille-Nacht-Platz (Silent Night Square) and leads along the Salzach River to the Nepomuk Monument (ascent to the Kalvarienberg Chapel).

The route continues over the newly built Europasteg to Laufen. After several stops in the former shipping town, the loop leads over the border bridge (which, by the way, is one of the most beautiful bridges in Europe!) back to the Austrian side to Oberndorf.

Through the city park to St. Nicholas Church, from there to the boatmen's monument on the Salzach and on along the Salzach dam to the Silent Night Chapel. This is where the circular route ends.

For experienced hikers, there is also a "large variant". This leads from the Nepomuk monument up 140 steps to the Calvary Chapel, on to the Baroque pilgrimage church of Maria Bühel and back across the Salzach, past the Schiffer Chapel and Schopperstadl and over the footbridge back to Laufen.

21 display panels - richly illustrated and informative - bring visitors closer to the once united historic towns.
