A life for the lake
Early in the morning, when the mist still lies over the Wallersee and the water glistens calmly, they are already on their way: the O-fishermen, the Kapeller family, custodians of the Wallersee and its treasures for over 130 years. Four generations, united by the water, the fish - and the love of their craft.
Christoph Kapeller, heute der Kopf des Betriebs, führt die Fischerei mit seiner Frau. Jeden Morgen fährt er mit Vater Christian und Großvater Christian senior hinaus auf den Wallersee. Seine Frau betreibt das kleine, feine „Frischfisch-Ladl“, wo Kund:innen täglich fangfrische Spezialitäten kaufen können. Mit dabei: Noah, Christophs Sohn. Obwohl er gerade zehn Jahre alt ist, kennt er den Wallersee besser als so mancher Erwachsene.
Fishing with passion on the Wallersee
Großvater Christian senior, inzwischen stolze 96 Jahre alt, lässt es sich trotz seines Alters nicht nehmen, jeden Tag mit auf den See zu fahren. „Solang i no steh, fahr i auch“, sagt er mit einem verschmitzten Lächeln, während er die Zille – das traditionelle Fischerboot – an den Ufersteg lenkt.
Viel hat sich verändert in den Jahrzehnten, meint er, „aber das Wasser, das bleibt uns immer treu.“

The O-Fishermen from Wallersee
There used to be many professional fishermen around the lake, but over time most of them withdrew. The Kapellers gradually took over the rights on the Fischach - the outflow of the lake - and became the O-fishermen. The name is derived from 'Achfischer' and gives the Kapeller family fishing rights on the Fischach, the outflow of the Wallersee near Seekirchen. Today, O-Fischer supplies well-known catering establishments such as Restaurant Winkler with fresh pike, zander, whitefish, perch - and seasonally also carp. Anything that does not come directly from the lake is farmed on the premises. A sustainable circular economy that tastes good - and works.

If you want, you can even venture out onto the lake yourself in summer: rowing boats and electric boats are available at the Kapeller family's jetty. A little adventure for anyone who wants to experience what it means to live with the lake.

Recipe: Pike-perch fillet Milanese style
Ingredients: 500 - 600 g pike-perch fillet, salt, white pepper, soya sauce, lemon juice, flour, 4 eggs, 100 g fresh parmesan or mountain cheese, fat or oil for frying, Tomato sauce: 4 ripe tomatoes, 1 small onion, 50g celery and carrots, 1 tbsp tomato puree, approx. ¼ litre water, 1 pinch of sugar, salt
