Things to know about
Oberndorf near Salzburg

The beautiful bridge over the river has connected the Salzach towns of Oberndorf and Laufen for generations - this picturesque structure was built around 1903 and has seen a lot.

Around 1816 Laufen, together with the Rupertiwinkel, was separated from Salzburg and awarded to the Kingdom of Bavaria: Oberndorf thus became Austrian and was now a border town between Bavaria and Austria. For both towns on the Salzach, Oberndorf and Laufen, the salt trade had once been of immense economic importance. With the construction of the railway in the 19th century, transport by ship declined more and more; in 1871 the last corresponding journey by water took place.

"Silent Night, Holy Night" ... The melody by Franz Xaver Gruber and the lyrics by Joseph Mohr have conquered hearts worldwide. On 24 December 1818, today's most popular Christmas carol was performed for the first time in the then Oberndorf church of St. Nikola. In the meantime, the German lyrics have been translated into 320 languages. The small Silent Night Chapel commemorates the origin of this wonderful song.

But Oberndorf is even more ...
In our idyllic little town along the river you can enjoy yourself. Get a whiff of the Salzach air, stroll around, enjoy the beautiful views, browse in the shops and settle down wherever you feel comfortable. And if you feel like moving more intensively: You will love the hiking and cycling trails along the Salzach and into the region.

The genesis of Silent Night

First sung in 1818

During the Christmas mass in 1818 Silent Night! Holy Night! sung for the first time by Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr in St. Nicholas Church. Gruber played the organ in Oberndorf from 1816 to 1829 and Mohr was assistant priest here from 1817 to 1819. The church was demolished at the turn of the century and in its place stands today the Silent Night Memorial Chapel.
